Mah Jongg With Meaning

Join us for a great day of MAH JONGG! There will be tables for social play, as well as tournament play. THIS YEAR WE WILL OFFER A TEACHING ROOM FOR MAH JONGG LESSONS! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

Come for delicious food, cash prizes, a silent auction, items for sale, a raffle and MAH JONGG!

All proceeds will benefit the Strive For Change Foundation, a great organization that supports local job-training programs to help hard-working residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties achieve financial stability.

New to Mah Jongg?

Have you always wanted to learn Mah Jongg but didn’t know where to start? This is a great opportunity to learn to play Mah Jongg while supporting Strive For Change Foundation.

Be sure to select “student” when you register.

Player Registration Information

Participant fee includes
Continental Breakfast, Lunch* and Beverages
(Donation to Strive for Change Foundation)

Tournament games are timed.

There will be three rounds, 55 minutes each.

You may also choose the option of “Social Play.” This is a
non-competitive time of play, and games will not be timed.

Both play options will use National Mah Jongg League Rules plus other recognized tournament rules for the tournament portion of play.

Limited parking available at Piedmont Community Center lot; neighborhood parking available in nearby blocks

9:00 – 9:45 am       Doors open, registration begins, continental breakfast served
10:00 am – 12:30 pm    Rounds ONE & TWO
12:30 – 1:00 pm   Lunch
1:00 – 2:30 pm Round THREE
2:30 pm Prizes awarded.  Auction and Raffle winners announced.

Mah Jongg Tournament 2019 Frequently Asked Questions

What times does the tournament start?
Doors open at 9:00 a.m. at Piedmont Community Church’s Guild Hall, 400 Highland Ave.
From 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. you can check in for the day, enjoy a Continental breakfast, get a cup of coffee or tea, and look at Mahj items for sale, as well as the raffle prizes.  We will begin playing Round One promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Is parking available?
We have limited number of reserved parking spaces available in the city parking lot across the street from Piedmont Community Church.  There is ample neighborhood parking in the blocks nearby the church.  A week before the tournament you will receive an email with all event details.

Is lunch included?
Yes!  Your registration includes lunch (with a vegetarian option), a continental breakfast and beverages.  If possible, please bring your own water bottle to help eliminate plastic.

What does it cost to play in the tournament?
Fees are shown below for two categories.  Reservations and payments must be received by the dates shown below:

Early Bird:   $ 60 by October 1, 2019
Regular:       $ 75 by November 2, 2019

Advanced registration and payment is required to participate in this tournament.  There is no day-of-event admission possible.

I want to come, but don’t know if I’m ready for a tournament. Can I still play?
Of course!  If you don’t think you will be able to keep up with the pace of tournament play, we offer the option of “Social Play.”  You will be assigned to a table and play three rounds of Mah Jongg during the day, but you don’t have to worry about getting through four games in every hour.  You and your tablemates will go at your own pace and play as many games in an hour as you can.

New this year: A Teaching Room
This year, we are offering a Teaching Room, for those who want to learn the game. If you’d like to do this, please choose the “Student” option when you register.

Are there prizes for the top finishers?
We will have cash prizes for the top three finishers and bonus hands.
